I have a deep love of certain tropes. Snowed in is one of them. And when I started writing the HOLIDAYS IN HEART FALLS stories, I quickly discovered that winter setting + holidays + couples getting together during a shorter time frame = rich ground for snowed in together plotlines!
Book 1, A FIREFIGHTER’S CHRISTMAS GIFT, has a snowed-in scene. So does A SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS WISH, although in a wholly unexpected way (let me say I never expected to be researching prepper-shelters for my books…)
But when it came to book 3, A HERO’S CHRISTMAS HOPE, I suddenly found myself in trouble. See, now I wanted to have all the books with a snowed in scene, but this story didn’t call for it, not in the same way. And fighting to make it happen was just wrong.
So, while there are holiday themes, and Christmas baking, and mistletoe and gifts and all sorts of traditions in the books, there isn’t a snowed-in scene in all of them. Which…is good. Because each story must fit the individual people.
Just like our own holiday traditions need to fit us, and where we are now.
Years ago, I used to send a ton of Christmas cards. And then the time I had available changed, and what was important to me adjusted, and I switched to writing one letter that I copied and sent out to friends and family. Now I’ve changed again, and the summary of what’s happened the past year is just for my family.
And that’s okay. Because that’s what fits.
I hope this holiday season you find what fits you.
And if you have time, come visit Heart Falls and enjoy some snowed-in romances, and some not snowed-in, but all of them just right for this holiday season.
