Flashback Friday - The Wind and The Sun

Today we are flashing back to The Wind and The Sun, a stand alone novella.

cover - The Wind & The Sun

Title: The Wind and The Sun

Heroine: Sunshine – Youngest daughter of the Bright family who is determined to keep the Sun family tradition by winning her challenge.

Hero: Zephyr – Youngest son of the Wind family who is determined to win over Sunshine, and keep her for himself.

Tidbit: Oh, man. This is my remake of Aesop’s Fable. The first in a series of remakes I planned to write, but then I ended up getting busy w cowboys, and these short stores got put to the side. But it was SO much fun writing this. Puns galore, lots of wind and sunshine jokes–lots of heat as well.

If you haven’t tried it yet, this book is one of those ‘strictly for fun’ get-away-for-an-hour reads. And Zephyr is sexy as get out. :D

Here is one of my favorite quotes:

"There was not a whisper of air between their bodies, not a speck of light passing between. "

Classics- guest Jamie

Last day of celebrating classics, and I’d like to welcome Jamie DeBree. She’s a reader I met via twitter, and she’s got a blog at The Variety Pages.

Jamie writes:

It All Started with “Patricia”

The first romance novel I ever read was an inspirational story titled “Patricia” by Grace Livingston Hill. She wrote in the 1930’s, so as you might imagine, they are very sweet, innocent romances. My mom introduced me to her books sometime in the ‘80’s when I was a young teen dealing with burgeoning hormones and all of the angst that comes with puberty. I was an avid reader even before that, and I devoured the story of a girl who had come back to her home town and two men she’d known since childhood. She had to choose between them, of course, and ultimately makes the right decision (of course), but more than the actual story, I remember how reading it made me feel.

I remember feeling confused, hopeful, anxious, intolerably sad, lost, and ultimately joyful as Patricia went through all of those emotions throughout the story. I was right there with her, cheering her on, wanting the best man to win her hand in the end. And when the story was over, I was truly amazed at the depth of emotion that one little book could wring out of me. It was quite an experience, especially for someone who tends to keep her emotions in check, on the outside at least. I remember wanting a love like that for myself someday – wanting to feel that deep connection with someone. I longed to find my “soul mate”, just as she had. I dreamed that my story would be as perfect as it was between those pages.

Needless to say, I did have my own small collection of romantic (and some not-so-romantic) entanglements. The one that “stuck” really did have to go through a test of time, like so many of those early inspirational novels. One of the central themes common to all of those books was that love is patient, and that “lesson” more than any other served me well in cultivating my own “happily ever after” – my husband and I dated for seven years before he proposed. When we finally got married, neither of us had any doubts at all, just like those characters I’d fallen in love with years before.

I still have my collection of Grace Livingston Hill novels in paperback – classic romances, in my opinion. I’ve read nearly all of them, and still occasionally go back and re-read one though my tastes generally run to far steamier fare these days.

To enter the contest today, do you remember your first romance novel?

Classic- Guest Natasha

When Viv asked for some guest posters to write about their classic book(s), I jumped at the chance! Woohoo!! Post on a Bestsellers blog? RIGHT ON!

But I’m discovering something about myself. I have a habit of jumping into the deep end with no lifejacket.

What on earth was I going to write about?

Then, I had a thought. I actually have two classics. The first is where I discovered my love of books and reading, and the second is how I discovered my love for paranormal books.

One of my only memories from when I was a young child was having my dad read to me. I had a ton of books, but there was one, THAT one that I would make him read over and over. It was a tongue twister, and I giggled every time he tried to twist his mouth around the riddles.  What book you ask? It was Dr. Seuss’ Oh Say Can You See.

Said a book-reading parrot named Hooey, “The words in this book are all phooey. When you join them your lips will make slips and back flips, and your tongue may end up in Saint Looey!”

How can you not love the imagination, especially as a child, that went with this and many of his other books? Green parrots, a talking cat, one fish and two fish! Green eggs and ham!!  Dr. Seuss inspired many a child. No dream was too big or impossible!

My next classic is one that people either love or hate. I was working at my local public library, and I was about 15 or 16, and my boss of all people introduced me to this series. They were filled with this brand new world, identical to ours, but there were vampires, werewolves, zombies, wererats, and necromancers.

Laurell K. Hamilton created a world that opened my eyes to possibility, a lot like Dr. Seuss now that I think about it.  Why couldn’t there be these beings? And really? They were damn sexy! Imagine what I thought as Laurell continued the series! Woo damn!

Plus, there was this amazing, strong, courageous, flawed woman. She kicked butt, wasn’t afraid to get hurt, and always picked herself up. Sometimes gingerly!

I dreamed to be like Anita. I wanted that strength. I want to be strong and not have people walk all over me.

I still read Anita when I need a pick me up.

You can find me and my beginner blog at My Disorganized Ramblings. There I talk about the crafts that I attempt to do, the cooking I try to kill my husband with, and most importantly? The books that I devour!!!  Oh, and I occasionally do a montage of my fur babies (my two kitties – Dot my girl and Dash my boy)

~~~
Tasha–you made me smile so hard! Thanks for being brave and impetuous enough to come and visit. Tasha is one of the readers I’ve had since the very beginning. She’s even had a ‘cameo’ in one book. :wink: To enter the contest today, either comment on your FAVORITE Dr. Seuss book, or you can talk about a strong woman character that you admire…or both!
Classics- Guest Heather
As we celebrate the release of The Wind & the Sun— here’s my next guest: Heather was the winner of the wolfies back in March during my anniversary party. She’s an avid reader of paranormal stories, and you can find her on  Twitter and at her blog:
Heather writes:
I have a bit of a confession to make, and it’s a big one —I don’t read the classics. The great romances on which many of the male characters I read are based on in some way; I’ve never read the original books though I love watching the movies or reading the modern adaptations. I’m thinking about Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, or the honorable Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility (though that might have been because he was played by Alan Richman in the movie). Though I did love Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones Diary the most out of my movie Mr. Darcy options. I have a soft spot for Colin Firth and his Christmas jumper. His cold and superior temperament towards Bridget went counter to his declaration”I like you just the way you are”. And his sparkling eyes whenever he saw her — I felt my heart go a pitter patter a bit. The cold and aloof romantic hero who fights his unfavorable attraction to Elizabeth (or Bridget) is a theme I feel that repeats in many paranormal romances but with the twist of the man also being a werewolf or vampire.
Another reworked classic that comes to mind the movie The Ten Things I Hate About You, which is based off William Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew. I loved this movie– it takes place at Padua high school rather than the streets of Padua in the play and the “tamer” is bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) and the ansty teenage shrew is Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles). Two suitors for Kat’s younger sister Bianca pay Patrick to woo Kat and soon he finds out she might be more than he can handle. Though there are distinct differences from the play — Patrick is a much more sympathetic character than Petruchio – once again we are faced with the alpha male than falls for a women despite himself and then fights his feelings for her.
So now that I’ve got one of my deep dark literary confessions out of the way — what do you think of modern adaptations in book or movie form versus the classic text? Should I run out now and grab a copy of Pride and Prejudice right now or do you think like modern adaptations like Bridget Jones Diary are the way to go? Do you have any modern adaptation suggestions for me?
