Nic and I were talking about this blog post, and what we’ve been reading. So I went to my ereader to look, and it suddenly hit me how much my reading habits have changed, but my library building hasn’t kept pace.
Here’s what I mean. There was a time when I moved every three-four years. I remember getting boxes from the liquor store to put the books for the move, and there would be SO MANY BOXES. I ran out of shelf space so often that Mr. Arend was constantly making new bookcases. And then I’d have to find a place to put them in the house!
When it really got out of hand I would do a purge. It would be an epic all day event of deciding which series went to the used book store and which I couldn’t let go.
Flash forward to today. I have very few print books. I read mostly ebooks and audio (and often have both of my favourite titles). But looking into my ereader, I accidentally set it to show the titles I haven’t read in the longest time.
Wow. I’d forgotten about THAT book. And that one. And I never did finish that one because it turned out the tropes weren’t my favourite. But still it sits there, taking up room.
Currently I have 1179 books on the virtual shelf and 184 audio. Only (only!) 200 ebooks are downloaded, but still…
Do I purge? Do I go through and get rid of some of these books that no longer fit my reading tastes? I know they aren’t hurting anything sitting there, but in some ways, they’re clutter the same as unread print books on a shelf.
What about you? Are you a print, audio, ebook, or combination reader? (And they are ALL books, so if you prefer one over another, that’s fine but there is no right answer.)
Do you get rid of books at some point? How do you choose? Print is easy to pass on/give to the thrift shop. Ebook and audio are simply…gone. I’m curious how everyone else deals with this.
And tell me I’m not alone in having a lot of books on my shelf!
