Last December 31 I sat down and did a Top Ten list of things I'd enjoyed/learned about writing in 2008. I went back and re-read it. I also found the goals I'd set early Jan 09. So in the spirit of season, a little reflection and introspection.
2009 has been an amazing year. Seeing my first story get published was a thrill and a a half, and the excitement continued. I started up International Heat with fellow authors. We established a yahoo group. Through it all I wrote. Revised. Edited and wrote some more. 300K words in my stories alone, not counting blogging, chatting and twitter addictions.
I still don't know how to touch type, but I'm getting better.
11 new stories written this year. Soul Deep, Turn It On, Claiming Derryn, Stormchild, Wolf Games, Peerless, Fateful, First Howl, Second Howl, Fired Up, Rocky Mountain Haven. Whirlpool is sitting at 25K, and a good push might let me finish by the 31st. My goal had been to write 5 books, so I more than met that one!
I had planned on submitting at least one book / quarter. The idea was to space out submissions, and hopefully have books releasing throughout the year. It doesn't work–I mean the trying to space it out part. I subbed two stories in July- one I received an offer on in October for a May release, the other sold mid December and it might be out as early as February. There's no easy way to plan these things, so I'm not going to worry about them anymore, and just enjoy writing.
I wanted to submit to at least three publishers. I love Samhain, and my editor there is pure gold, but I wanted to make sure to experience a little more and see who else is out there. I now have contracts with Liquid Silver, Ellora's Cave, Total-E Bound as well as Samhain.
I made it out to the Lori Foster reader/writer conference in Cincinnati, and got to meet some of the other ladies from International Heat- Mari, Valerie, Jayne, Jambrea. Getting to hug Rahian Cahill who I never thought I'd meet in personal, was a highlight that still makes me smile.
I'm still writing by the seat of my pants BUT I can see the value in a little plotting, and even break out the ‘what's their motivation' question without Jess Dee hitting me over the head as much.
Over 2009 I had five books release, Wolf Signs, Soul Deep, Tidal Wave, Rocky Mountain Heat and Wolf Flight. I am so thankful for the positive reception they've received from readers. The idea that someone out there is reading my scribbles sends a shiver up my spine. I don't think that sensation is ever going to go away.
As I head into 2010 I know I've got new lessons to learn. New goals to reach for. And you know what? The journey is still as exciting as the destination, and I'm planning on enjoying every moment. Thank you for your support, and encouragement. Thank you for buying my books and sending me notes.
