There's a post up today at Dear Author about Romance and Deaf characters, and in passing it's mentioned that other than in Wolf Signs, they've never heard of a deaf character in paranormal.
I never realized that was so rare a topic, although I have gotten letters from members of the deaf community who shared that they enjoyed the book. I think one of my favorites is the reader who is deaf and said I got it right– the emotions like frustration at trying to be understood at times, the turning away your eyes to ‘not hear' someone when you want to ignore them.
That makes me very happy, to have done justice to something that is a daily reality to many people.
If you'd like to see the article it's here. Dear Author: Romances and Deaf characters

Wow…that is a really fascinating article! Just think…you are a ground breaker, how cool is that.
Very cool, although not intended as such!
😀
Way cool! I LOVED the way you wrote Robyn! I think it was seeing the world from her perspective and getting that glimpse of what it’s like to be “different.”
As the mother of a child who is “different” (autism not deafness), I love it when I read about characters with challenges in books and see them in movies. I like there to be reality in my fantasy. 😀
Thanks, Louise.
We were having a discussion about this on twitter, that reality is the world is NOT filled with leggy blonde, blue eyed women and muscular dark haired men who all end up with perfect lives.
Yet we can all have HEAs which will look slightly different based on where we start. That reality is very important to me. I’m glad you enjoyed Robyn. She’s still one of my favorites– I think we could be friends.
I think it would be great if more authors would write about characters who are not “Perfect”, like anyone really is. I would definitely read more books that feature characters who have adversities (sp?) to overcome. Thanks for being a ground breaker and hopefully a leader/inspiration to other authors to step outside of the norm.
Thanks, June.
