I've been sitting on pins and needles for weeks, hoping for a response on a story I submitted.
I had written ‘Hidden Away' and really fell in love with the world of my werewolves. Then I found a submissions call for novellas about humourous wolves/ghosts and other spookies. The deadline was May 30th with selection by June 16th.
So in spite of the fact that it was already mid April, even though we were packing up the house and moving into a camper for a while. Plus going camping for a couple of weekends… well I wrote the story and submitted 20K.
I have to say I -like- that I only had to wait two weeks for an answer. (I HATE waiting…) I got a ‘No…but'. I wasn't selected for the anthology but the editor was kind enough to pass on the story to another editor to look at as a regular submission.
She was also very quick and by June 23 I had another ‘No…but'. She gave me suggestions for revisions and said she'd look at again if I revised. Side note. Wow, was she ever good with her suggestions! I could see where the issues were and possibilities for changing. I am so glad that she's good at her job!
Of course June 25 the family left for a three week trip to the east coast. I did take the laptop along and started revising. It worked well. I'd stew about scenes in my brain and then when I finally got a few minutes with electricity I'd flash out words like wildfire!
I resubmitted July 18th.
Did I mention I HATE waiting?
Late yesterday I got the email. ‘THE' email.
It wasn't ‘No…but'. It was ‘Yes…but'.
That's when the heart pounding started. I need to sign a contract still, but I'm not too superstitious. It's gonna happen. I'm getting published!
Oh, and the ‘…but' part? I need to change the story title. Which is totally throwing me now as I've had the title since the first minute. But I can come up with something.
Because I'm a writer.
