12 Days of Giving #8

I promise I’m not going to make too many of these challenges cost $$, but this one might.

Give a kid a gift.

If you have a local charity, you know right now is the time they are really looking for help. Angel Trees, or whatever the organization is called in your location, have the kids names and information already waiting. These are kids who won’t get a present if someone else doesn’t pick their request up. (And the older ones, while not as much fun to buy for, need loving too)

But you know what? There’s also another way you can join this challenge, and it’s no cost and sneaky organization efficient, while also teaching your own kids a lesson in giving. If you’ve got a family, and there will be new ‘stuff’ coming into your house in the next couple weeks, what if you grabbed a box, and had a few ‘old’ toys (kids or otherwise) get passed onto a thrift shop?

It will make more room in the toybox (electronic/computer/kitchen shelf) and the proceeds from good thrift shops turn around by not only providing an inexpensive place to purchase things, but often the profits stay in your community.

~~**~~

I have a Wolf hand puppet with some wolfie things to give away, like a set of Granite Lake Romance Trading cards and an exclusive 2012 ‘Pack Member dog tag’ in purple. This is one of the last of the limited editions ones…;)

Remember, you don’t have to DO the challenge if you can’t, this is just to make us think, right? If you’d like to have your name added for this gift, make a comment about anything holidayish.

We go through and donate to Thrift stores regularly. It helps the group running the store and keeps the clutter down in our house.

I try to go through my belongings, especially clothes, each season and donate the ones I haven’t worn. This year I also got rid of household goods as well.

I have stuff boxed up I need to take to one of the missions– my daughter went through her toys. My husband works in a hospital cath lab and instead of exchanging gifts or doing a secret santa they adopted two families. It was really cool. He chose a 11 year old girl, Alexis, and we took my daughter and the three of us picked out gifts for her. I also need to gather up our coats that the kids have outgrown and drop them off at one of the town’s coat drives.

I wish everyone’s work place would adopt families instead of having gift exchanges:)

We donate stuff, clothes toys books etc to our local thrift store once or twice a year. Whenever i go through and collect the stuff we aren’t using or stuff that doesn’t fit. I buy there now and then for my own kids too.

All the angel tree stuff around here is done already but we have done those before. I always pick a girl because i have 3 boys and it gives me a chance to shop for a girl. Fun!

Great reminder, Vivian–the kids just helped with a toy drive at school, and we have a stack of new toys to bring to the local fire station (who collects this time of year to distribute to kids in need).

We usually do one of the angel tree kids with our girls.

I have a box full of toys and stuff I need to run by one of the places around here. Thanks for the reminder.

I went to the Walmart and picked one of the “little wishes” for a foster child in the area, and was able to get the art set he wanted.

I did this last week. When we were at Walmart, we picked a card for a little girl. Went and got some barbies 🙂

We collect for Toys for Tots at work. On Tuesday, we delivered the toys to the local Marine drop off site. They were thrilled to get all we collected. If you ever want to feel great, drop off a load of toys to one of these drop off spots. My contribution of 4 yoga mats and 2 motorized cars were a huge hit. They were thrilled with the yoga mats since they didn’t have much for teen girls.

Merry Christmas!

I’m like the others: where I try to go through my household items and donate to shelters. I’m actually going to be doing that this weekend. I try to donate: blankets, clothes, books… and give to shelter.

When I worked in a call center (about 400 people worked in the same building) we adopted several families and also helped some of our own that were in need. It was so amazong to see what were able to do for each of them. We are not in the position to adopt a family this year on our own but I did clean out Monkey’s (6 year old son) room and donated tons of toys to Goodwill and we donated several of his books to his school for book exchanges with the kids. 🙂

My mom runs a kids club at her church for the kids in the neighborhood. The church is in an older section of town. Each year they have a Christmas party for the kids. She asks for donations to give the kids each a gift. I usually try to buy a couple gifts to help out each year.
