Give to the food bank.
Over the holidays we usually have special dinners to prepare or attend. Even when money is tight, we try to have things that make the season special to the family. For years, the only time I bought Gherkin pickles was at Christmas. That $1 jar of tiny sweet pickles always signaled the start of the season to my daughter.
When you’re shopping this week, pick up one extra can of…something, and drop it into the food bank donation bin before you leave the store.
For every person who adds a comment to this thread, I’ll purchase an item for our local food bank. I also have the pick of my backlist in ebook for one commentor. Let me know what special food treat your family enjoys over the holidays.

Right now i know the grocery store is collecting for toys for tots but i’m not sure they have a food box. I’ll have to look. I see them here and there at various stores at different times during the year though. A lot of the kids school things include a food donation to get into.Like a school dance or something is cheaper by a few bucks if you bring a can of food. We usually do that when they have it.
I guess you could say we eat a lot of cookies every yr. My mom likes to bake and give us cookies in a ice cream pail. lol

Pistachio Torte!! YUM!! My kids always ask for it!
We actually did this recently. About a week or so ago my Monkey’s school did it’s annual food drive. His class won first place collecting 400 cans in their class alone. 🙂 They sent a list of items the food bank really needed and we bought at least 4 of each item each day.

My mom’s cookies. She used to bake and bake and bake (and we would sneak and sneak from the freezer! Mmm frozen cookies!!). I’ve taken up the tradition, and have some photocopies of her recipes (her recipe book is crumbling and we are trying to figure out how to preserve it).
As for donating to the Food Bank, our local grocery stores all have pre bagged stuff, for about $5-6. There are usually some cans, and boxes, and you buy at the regsiter, and then on your way out they have a bin for you to place the package in. It’s an easy way of helping out, and we try to do one or two every month or so.
This week when I finish up my shopping for Christmas dinner I will drop some food into the food bank bin.
All the treats I make my family loves 🙂 Especially the Cranberry Cheesecake bars and eagle Brand Magic bars.
Fudge. It is the only time of the year we make it. 🙂
making M&M cookies during the holidays is a family tradition… yummy! 😀
Every year we make bunuelos, and tamales. All year the church we attend asks the parishers to donated food for our local pantry. So all year is the time for giving to those in need.
Pecan pies that my aunt makes. They are wonderful!
Besides dessert, I crave green bean casserole during the holidays.
We just did a food drive at wor, and Friday we turned in 850 cans-I think I took a couple cans a day for two weeks. It is hard to carry a lot of cans when you ride the bus to work, so I hae to spread it out a bit.
My mom makes Ginger Creams only at Christmas time. They are my favorite cookies.
I like peppermint shakes.
And we usually participate in our works adopt-a-family as well as my daughter’s school.
We’re making chocolate graham toffee bark to share this Christmas 🙂
As for the food bank, both kids’ schools had food drives and the local library–we are very happy to support all of them generously. We are so thankful that we haven’t been in the position of going hungry, and want to help make sure other families won’t be either.
I love those cookies with the hershy kis in the middle. Yum! My fave.
On a side note: My work get a huge box every year and we donate lots and lots of canned foods and non perishable items. I actually just brought in 10 cans of different types of progresso soup, 2 boxes og augratin potatoes, a box of rice and misc items like Kool aid..etc.
Gingerbread cookies and eggnog! Yum. We also donate to a local food bank through my daughter’s school.
