This is another challenge that will take time, but not much money.
Give a letter of encouragement.
There are so many people you could do this for. Someone in the military. Someone you've lost touch with who lives far away. One of your children's teacher. Your best friend. Your spouse. Someone that would love to hear from you, and hear you say that they matter to you.
Doesn't have to be a 3 page missive. Even a couple of lines, heartfelt and real. Are you up for the challenge? I hope you are–and I'm going to do this as well. I'm taking all the challenges along with you. 😉

I received one not long ago from you that made me smile all day long! Thanks, Viv!
🙂 You’re easy to make smile. And fun!
Uh oh! I’m easy? Yikes!
On a more serious note, a few years ago I realized I’d lost touch with one of my sisters, and so for Christmas I gave her the gift of a promise of a regular series of long and chatty hand-written letters from me to her. We’ve been writing back and forth ever since, and only this year extended into IM, e-mail and other more instant forms of communication. Oh, and we still write — with special inks and special notepapers (hunting for them is half the fun) — throughout the year, as well. It’s brought us back together in a meaningful way. I encourage this type of gift, especially in an age where gratification (with toys, electronics, etc.) is instantaneous, and the gift of your own time, and your own thoughts on paper, is priceless, and welcomed.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, and to all your readers!
Thanks for this suggestion, Viv! I’ve done it before, but it’s time to again 🙂 And yes, I’ve been blessed on occasion to receive a note that was just right–what a lift that’s been! As it says in Proverbs 25:11, “Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.” What we say CAN absolutely make a difference! 🙂
I wonder about the art of sending letters- how it will continue to evolve. I’ll say I love emails, but there is something extraordinary about a handwritten note as well.
I have received a few letters and cards that have made me smile… whether the picture or saying on the card or what the person took the time to say… it is always wonderful to hear from someone that you have not talked to or seen in ages!
Sometimes my sister and I print out little cute cards to give each other for no other reason than to see how the other reacts.
Love that– you and your sis. It’s part of knowing each other well enough you can encourage, and tease 😉 , just right!
I used to send out cards that people would tell me how much it made them smile. I had a few people complain because I didn’t send cards and gifts to “everyone”. I stopped my annual card and gift love fest for a long time. This year is the first time I have done it for years and I am really enjoying both sending and receiving Christmas cards. I plan to continue all year long becuase I enjoy it.
Yes, taking a break sometimes helps make it clearer what we really enjoy spending time on. Good for you for planning on keeping it up.
At work we just collected letters to send to the soldiers overseas. I really enjoyed it and I hope we will do it again. You don’t have to enter me to win though. I got a letter form you that made me smile too 🙂
