Cool Books- Insatiable

I tried making the cover smaller. Really I did.

I’ll just wait until everyone is ready to tear their eyes away. Or maybe not, since I think I could stare at him for a long, long time.

Lauren Dane’s latest is out today–the third book in the Federation Series, a futuristic world that melds fantastic world building with her usual extraordinarily strong characters.

The first book, Undercover, is one of my all time favorite books by Lauren. It’s now got a rival in Insatiable.

The players:

Daniel Haws–member of the Phantom Corps dedicated to making the war between the ‘Verses turn in the favour of right.

Carina Fardelle- a woman of infinite strength hidden behind innocent softness.

The plot:

At it’s most basic, this is a retrieval story. There is information to be gathered, and Daniel Haws is the best man to go and get it. But the layers within the story make it so much more.

Carina is the daughter of the Supreme Commander, a part of the side of evil through no choice or desire of her own. As the struggle escalates between Federation and Imperial ‘Verses, the information she and her mother have gathered becomes vital to the fight. Daniel will get her out, retrieve the data, and the tide can turn.

But it’s never that easy. There’s more at stake than a hidden information capsule. There’s the retrieval of rights torn away from Carina over the years by a power hungry father, the fight to gain back a heart that has begun to be hardened by the war. There’s dealing with guilt and looking to the future even as they try to survive the present.

I was particularly struck by the character of Carina. Lauren’s heroines are always strong, determined and intelligent women. In Carina I saw something slightly different–a softer side, less edgy and snarky. Still intelligent, but with an innocent touch. Her deep determination to gain what she wanted was done in just the right way for me to admire her, and see her as a person of great value. She was the perfect blend of heroine to mesh with the hero.

Insatiable is a book that I believe can stand on it’s own–even though it’s in a series, you could dive in now and not only understand what is happening, but be intrigued for more of this fantastic world Dane has created.

You know how difficult this makes it for me to wait until RWA’s literacy signing to get it?

Darlin Azteclady, I won’t be at Nationals this year unfortunately. I wish I could be, but with moving and stuff, I had to stick closer to home and spend less dough, LOL.
